Never before has the everyday soundtrack of urban space been so cacophonous. Since the 1970s, sound researchers have attempted to classify noise, music, and everyday sounds using concepts such as Pierre Shafer’s sound object and R. Murray Schafer’s soundscape. Recently, the most significant team of soundscape researchers in the world has been concerned with the effects of sounds on listeners.
In a multidisciplinary work spanning musicology, electro-acoustic composition, architecture, urban studies, communication, phenomenology, social theory, physics, and psychology, Jean-François Augoyard, Henry Torgue, and their associates at the Centre for Research on Sonic Space and the Urban Environment (CRESSON) in Grenoble, France, provide an alphabetical sourcebook of eighty sonic/auditory effects. Their accounts of sonic effects such as echo, anticipation, vibrato, and wha-wha integrate information about the objective physical spaces in which sounds occur with cultural contexts and individual auditory experience. Sonic Experience attempts to rehabilitate general acoustic awareness, combining accessible definitions and literary examples with more in-depth technical information for specialists.

Our ability to focus attention on the speech of a specific speaker by disregarding irrelevant information coming from the surroundings … From the physical point of viev, one of the predominant elements is the spatial separation of noise and speech … on the psycho-physiological level, selective listening is governed by our capacity to discriminate sounds from different sources – that is, by our capacity to localize in the noise.
Jean-François Augoyard, a philosopher, urban planner, and musicologist, is the founder of CRESSON-CNRS (National Scientific Research Centre) at the School of Architecture in Grenoble.
Henry Torgue, a sociologist and urban planner, is a researcher at CRESSON and an author, pianist, and composer.
Ort und Landschaft

In modernen Städten steht die Funktionalität und die Mobilität von Menschen, Gütern und Informationen nach wie vor im Mittelpunkt. Doch gewinnt in den letzten Jahren die Eigenart von Orten und Landschaften an Bedeutung. In der Konkurrenz um Kapital und qualifizierte Arbeit bestimmen sie die Standorte mehr und mehr. Die Aufgabe der Planung und der ihr vorgelagerten Politik ist zusammenzubringen, was Widerspruch erzeugt. Es geht darum, Energieproduktion und Ortsbildung, Gewerbe und Parkgestaltung, Landwirtschaft und Erholungslandschaft zusammen zu denken. Es geht um die Entdeckung und Gestaltung von Ort und Landschaft „überall“. Es geht darum, das Paradigma der Zonierung hinter sich zu lassen und an simultanen Räumen zu arbeiten. Den Widerspruch zwischen Ortsraum und Fließraum gilt es als eine ästhetische Herausforderung zu begreifen. Simultane Planung erzeugt Konflikte, geht gegen eingefahrene Erfahrungen an. Simultane Planung ist kommunikative Planung, sie benötigt die aktive Teilnahme der Bürgerschaft.
Detlev Ipsen, Professor für Stadt- und Regionalsoziologie an der Universität Kassel. Gastprofessor in Porto Alegre, Brasilien, Forschungsprofessur der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft und Fellow am Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg. When I began researching for this book, I decided to include as many perspective as I could find: a broad interdisciplinarity viewpoint that transcended individual disciplines. Philosophically, we can never access phenomenon directly, but like a hidden object, we can infer its properties by looking at the shadows that it casts through the filter of dozens of disciplines. Aural architecture is the unifying concept of the aural influence of space on the social, behavioral, and musical activities of the inhabitants. While the concept appears to be new, its roots go back to cavemen and spans the millenia across many cultures, including our modern high-tech electronic arts. Electronic music has its own artistic concept of spatiality.
To my surprise, when I was finished with the book project, the unifying theme became clear. As a species in all our artistic and technical activities, the need for social cohesion explains why our spaces are the way they are. Aural architecture is just one example of that conclusion.
